In the wake of the official trailer for Heart of the Beast, the new film starring Oscar winner Brad Pitt, in this article we offer you the trailer for Whalefall, another very particular survival-thriller that has captured the attention of web cinephiles in recent days.
The trailer for Whalefall
There are synopses that win you over immediately, and then there is the one of Whalefall that anticipates: “A diver destroyed by pain is swallowed by a sperm whale and has an hour to escape before the oxygen runs out”. This is the strange, but intriguing premise of the survival thriller coming from 20th Century Studios and directed by Brian Duffield, director of “No One Will Save You“.
The first trailer, which you can enjoy within the article, suggests that the film will focus completely on the claustrophobic nightmare anticipated by its premise: the footage goes from underwater fear to panic typical of a survival thriller, with the character of Abrams trapped in a living and pulsating tomb, forced to find a way out.
An intriguing project
Based on the 2023 novel by Daniel Kraus, “Whalefall” stars Austin Abrams as Jay Gardiner, a diver searching for the remains of his deceased father, Mitt Gardiner, played by Josh Brolin. The dive quickly turns into something worthy of a primordial horror story: Jay encounters a giant squid, then a sperm whale and is swallowed alive, becoming trapped inside the animal with oxygen about to run out.
The plot has been described as a cross between “The Martian” and “127 Hours”, which makes sense: it’s a story of survival in a closed environment, but in a situation that is also a biological death trap. The basic idea may seem absurd on paper, but the emotional core is the pain of the father-son relationship, with Jay forced to fight for his life as he deals with the trauma that drove him into the water.
The team behind Whalefall
Duffield co-wrote the script with Kraus and is also a producer. Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Jeb Brody and Allan Mandelbaum are also producers. The supporting cast includes Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy and Emily Rudd. Behind the camera, the film boasts photography by Aaron Morton, editing by Pietro Scalia and music by Joseph Trapanese.
It should be noted that Brian Duffield’s career is becoming more and more interesting: with “Whalefall”, the author remains in the field of highly conceptual genre storytelling after “Spontaneous” and the almost dialogue-free thriller about the alien invasion “No One Will Save You”. Meanwhile, Austin Abrams’ next film will be the highly anticipated Resident Evil by Zach Cregger, who had already directed him in the modern masterpiece Weapons.
“Whalefall” will be released in theaters distributed by 20th Century Studios on October 16, 2026.
