Since its debut in September 2020, the Enola Holmes franchise has established itself as one of Netflix’s most recognizable original sagas. Supported by the interpretation of Millie Bobby Brown as the brilliant younger sister of Sherlock Holmes, played by Henry Cavill, the first two films won over the audience of the platform and obtained a very positive reception from critics. Now the saga is preparing to return with a highly anticipated third chapter, which brings the main cast back on stage but, as the new trailer shows, it also seems ready to significantly change the already tested formula.
The trailer for Enola Holmes 3 opens with a high-action sequence: Enola, dressed as a bride, finds herself fighting for her life inside a carriage chased over rough terrain by a mysterious masked criminal on horseback. The scene is then interrupted by the protagonist herself, who reconstructs the events that led to that moment. Through some flashbacks, the video shows the new life built by Enola next to Tewkesbury, played by Louis Partridge, up to the marriage proposal that changes the balance of their relationship.
Marriage becomes one of the central elements of the new chapter. According to the tradition of the Holmes family, the wedding must take place in Malta, and so the whole family moves to the Mediterranean island. But the trailer suggests that Enola does not live this transition without conflict: on the one hand she loves Tewkesbury, on the other she fears losing her name, her independence and the professional reputation she has painstakingly won as a detective.
To further complicate the situation comes a new emergency. In the present, in fact, it turns out that the masked man chasing the carriage is Watson, played by Himesh Patel, who has come all the way to Malta to warn Enola of shocking news: Sherlock has been kidnapped. The third film therefore seems to be built around a double narrative line, intertwining the protagonist’s personal crisis with a mystery that forces her to intervene on the very day that should have marked a turning point in her private life.
The move of the action to Malta represents one of the most evident novelties of Enola Holmes 3. The first two films had used Victorian England, gloomy, industrial and rainy, to also tell the social rigidities against which Enola was constantly fighting. The new chapter, on the other hand, promises a brighter and more Mediterranean aesthetic, with different settings and new visual and narrative challenges. Also contributing to this change is the transition of direction to Philip Barantini, winner of an Emmy, while Jack Thorne returns to the screenplay.
In addition to the change of scenery, the trailer also suggests an important evolution for the characters. The possible marriage puts Enola in front of a central question for the entire franchise: how to reconcile love, personal growth and the desire for independence? The choice to have Sherlock kidnapped also overturns the traditional dynamic between the two brothers. It is no longer Enola who moves in the shadow of the famous investigator, but it is Sherlock who finds himself in a position of vulnerability, leaving his sister the task of taking matters into her own hands.
Enola Holmes 3 therefore seems to want to raise the stakes both on an emotional and adventure level. The protagonist finds herself torn between a sentimental future that could change her life and a mission that forces her to prove, once again, that she is not just “Sherlock Holmes’ sister”. The film will arrive globally on Netflix on July 1.
